Back to the Basics of Nutrition

Sometimes it can be helpful to take a look back at how things used to be in order to move forward and create change in the future. This is especially true when it comes to food and nutrition. When we take the time to look back at how people used to eat, its pretty amazing the drastic difference in how and what we eat now.

Food used to be “whole food” and sourced locally, supporting both the local economy and community. It wasn’t made in factories or with addictive ingredients and chemicals. People knew where their food came from, the farmer or family who grew it or raised it, and what it was made out of. This way of eating was simple and no labels were required because whole foods are as close to their natural state as possible. Real Whole Foods don’t require a label full of unreadable ingredients.

What we eat matters. It matters to our bodies, our minds, and our souls. Foods are powerful and somehow we have gotten way off track, settling for convenience and familiarity.

What would it look like to go back to the basics of nutrition?

Understanding the foods we eat and why we eat them is more important now than it ever has been. There is no denying that what we eat matters. The foods we choose affect our mind, body, and soul. Yet all too often we simply choose foods because they are familiar, convenient, or inexpensive. Never taking into consideration that over time the ingredients have changed, the way it’s made is different, and the nutrient value has decreased. These “convenient foods” now contain chemicals, addictive additives, artificial ingredients, and dyes with little to no real food. If we stop and consider the way modern day food is made, how it is processed, “created”, and marketed to us, we might be more inclined to go “Back to the Basics” of how we used to eat.

Just because we ate it as a kid, doesn’t mean we should feed it to ours.
